Coding tutorial:
1 – Computer to Car Connection
The OBD-2 port on the i3 is located between the steering wheel and the driver door, under the steering wheel, inset into the underside of the dash.

2 – Reading and writing the codes
Coding is done with the car in the “Ready” state, you will need to press the ‘Start’ button to have the car on. It is best to do this with the car plugged into a charger, but if that is not possible just make sure you have enough battery.
Note for beginners: The values (numbers) are in Hexadecimal format (numbers go from 0-F, as opposed from 0-9 for decimal). For something that is on and off it is easy, 00=off, 01=on (usually). But for something needing a number value the decimal value needs to be converted to Hexadecimal first (Google ‘Hex converters’). So if you need to enter the number 24 you enter 18 Hex. Decimal 255 would be FF in Hex.
Note: Make sure to unplug the enet cable from the OBD2 port and PC when you are done. If they are left in when you try to lock the car, the car will not lock and the alarm will go off!
Note: Backup, Backup, Backup! It is a good idea to create backups before you make changes (you can save and load the CAFD files in the Coding directory). Or at the very least write down the default values so you can change them back!

3 – After a Dealer Upgdate or Reset
If you visit your dealer for a software update, or if the dealer resets your car’s computer your values will all be back to default. You will have to manually reprogram everything or load from a backup. Note that with a software update some of the actual functions might change, so probably best to manually re-enter values after a major software upgdate. No the dealer will not do this for you!

4 – Viewing Offline
If you want to just peruse the options while not in a cramped car on a laptop, you can view all the files offline at your leisure.

5 – The Codes:
Note: Any code that resets the iDrive display seems to blow away the 1-8 shortcuts you have created. So you might want to save your iDrive settings to USB (see the manual) so they can be reloaded after.

AM Radio

Each button can be programmed for independent operation for a short, mid or long press. Options include:
Werte=00 – No action
Werte=02 – Open trunk (rear boot)
Werte=03 – Panic alarm
Werte=05 – Open frunk (front boot)
Default value for 3rd button is open frunk for mid and long press (no action for short so you do not accidently open the frunk with a quick press)
Default value for the 4th button is panic for long press only (no action for short or mid, so you have to press for a bit)
The trunk is not enabled at all by default





Smart Key Teach-in only supports Mercedes-Benz Smart (1998~2002) with K-line protocol.

MB – Smart vehicles dongle key programmer

SMART Teach-in is required when keys are lost, damaged or if additional key is needed.
Also, this procedure synchronizes engine ECU with BSI – can be used when changing damagedECU or BSI with new/used one!

For adapting each remote with Immobilizer / BSI module the following dongle can be used:
1. Turn ignition ON without starting engine (position “1”).
2. Insert dongle in OBD connector (it is located under steering column, near pedals).
3. The LEDs must lit both, then green must blink few times. If all OK, green LED remains lit and red must be off. If  red LED blinks fast, this means an error, you may remove dongle and try again.
4. If red LED is off and green is on, turn OFF the ignition key.
5. Press twice LOCK button on each remote (if 3 button remote used) within 30 sec. Maximum of 4 keys can be programmed.
6. Turn ignition ON again, this completes learning sequence. Remote controls are working only when ignition is OFF, cranking is possible only when vehicle is in UNLOCK-ed state.



Here is a manual of how to read F series I-Step from VCM master, using BMW E-sys software.


The I-Level (aka I-Step) is the Integration Level of your car, which represents a package of firmwares for all your modules, and it corresponds to the version of ISTA/P last used to program your vehicle.

To determine your I-Level, go to VCM Module => VCM Master Tab => click Read under I-Steps:


The I-Step (current) is the one you want to match when you select the CAFD from the Detect CAF for SWE options (e.g. F001-08-09-550):


When you lost power in the middle of FDL Coding your CAFD, it became corrupted. What I am having you do is insert the same CAFD in it’s default generic state and then coding it based on your specific Vehicle Order (Production Date and Option Codes) so in the end you will have exactly what you started with before the power failure and CAFD corruption.

As I have repeatedly stated, so long as one isn’t coding the DME module, you should code with the engine running, and will you never have to worry about loosing vehicle power mid-coding, unless of course you run out of gas.






I used this VMWare Workstation 12 on a Mac to successfully flash the PPK on a 2012 335xi e90 today. it shouldn’t be too hard to make it work with fusion I don’t think. ISTA/P is working awesome! In a uncompressed VM size with ISTA/P is 280GB.
Note: have to run it in bootcamp until we can find a workaround for mac users

Diagnostic tools can be used:
K+DCAN and ENET cables are supported for everything but MOST ring modules. For those, you will still need an ICOM emulator.

memory setting:

I would recommend anyone with less than 16gb of total host memory drop the VM memory down to 4gb or less.


connecting in either NAT or Bridge mode:

for use of an ICOM or ENET cable, you will need to use bridge mode. For general E9x and other K+DCAN vehicles, your network settings will not affect your ability to connect to the vehicle.



I chose VMWare because I feel like it’s the most stable and offers the most features. I may look into building a version with Virtualbox but at least for now, I’m going to stick with VMWare. I do however, want to get a mac to test with so that I can make sure I can get it working in Fusion as well as on PC. I think building an underlying linux host is a good idea, however, the idea behind this VM was simplicity and I feel like building it in this manner would be counter intuitive to that end goal.


Ublock instead of ABP:

I could install ublock origin instead of Ad Block Plus in Chrome to save some resources as well as speed it up a bit.


PDF Printer/CuteWriter:

Might be nice to have a PDF printer, like CutePDF pre-installed for “printing” from the various diagnostic tools.


Datens on the desktop:
I included these raw daten files in rar format for a reason. While they all are already loaded in NCSExpert, INPA, and the like. WinKFP deals best with one model series daten at a time. If you need to use WinKFP to program a module, extract that rar file and use the BMW coding tool to load it into WinKFP. There is a PDF in the help files folder on the desktop that illustrates how to use the coding tool to load the files into WinKFP. If you don’t plan on ever using WinKFP or programming some of these chassis codes you can go ahead and delete those or all of the datens.



All above is the customer solution. Try on your own risk.

Safe solution & easiest way is to avoid all installation problems, you can spend some dollars to buy BMW Rheingold software that has been installed on hard disk:

Open the gate (pull it out) before you start working with HU92 decoder
The Turbo wheel (last wheel) must be all the way to the LEFT
Reset all 8 pins to position 0, 4pins on each side of the tool
(that is, push the pins all the way DOWN)

Every time you insert the tool in the lock or pull it out of the lock, the gate must be closed (PUSH IT IN) and the Turbo wheel must be RIGHT
Open the gate (pull it out), push the Tension wheel only to LEFT when insert the tool
NOTE: when there is NO tension in the Turbo wheel, it means that the tool is not inserte correctly. Please close the gate (push it in), turn the tool around and open the gate. Then also push the Tension wheel only to LEFT.
Start “pumping” by turning the Turbo wheel all the way to the LEFT & releasing the Tension wheel

Close the gate, turn the Turbo wheel to the RIGHT and then put it out.
